Aren't the deposits supposed to be covered by the government? Some sort of insurance?

In the US most banks are covered by the FDIC--Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. I think we need all the good ideas we can get and the French may have a good one. They are not as much under the corporate thumb as the US.
