In Jungian terms this is called the "Collective Shadow". Unless dealt with on a individual level by each one of us absorbing one's own shadow complex, each individual's shadow characteristics and the stolen energy associated with them, automatically pool into the Collective --- and then appear in our environment as "fate".
That is what we are seeing - and what we have yet to see.
It can become catastrophic.

The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. This act is the essential condition for any kind of self-knowledge.
