[TD="class: vTop"]What: Q&A on NDAA Lawsuit panelists plus audience questions
When: August 2, 2012, 6 p.m. EST
Where: Free US conference call (details for other nations soon)
Who: Legal team, Plaintiffs Dan Ellsberg, Honorary Birgitta Jonsdottir, and Tangerine Bolen; David Segal ofDemand Progress, and numerous leading reporters, bloggers and activists.
Why: To WIN this case and get your rights back!
Seven plaintiffs, backed by multiple civil liberties and human rights groups, filed suit against President Obama, Leon Panetta, and 6 members of Congress over the 2012 NDAA last March. The lawsuit, spearheaded by plaintiffs Chris Hedges and Tangerine Bolen, is one of the only things standing in between innocent citizens everywhere and the threat of indefinite detention by the US military under Section 1021 of the NDAA. Journalists, lawyers and activists around the world have expressed profound concern and criticism over a provision that effectively suspends due process of the law and threatens to destroy First Amendment rights.
We WON round one of our lawsuit in May, after Obama-appointed Judge Katherine Forrest ruled entirely in our favor and granted a temporary restraining order against this provision. She did so after the US government refused to provide assurances (when asked 5 times) that plaintiffs and others would not be subjected to indefinite detention for exercising First Amendment rights.
We expect the government to appeal which means this case could go all the way to the Supreme Court a court that has demonstrated its willingness to side against the people and fundamental liberties time and again. The US government appears to want to keep the right to a "gray area" in the law to be interpreted by the US president leaving them the right and ability to arrest you for lawful activities.
We need your help!
This call will take place 5 days before the final hearing on this case on August 7 when we hope Judge Forrest will grant us a permanent injunction. Lawyers and plaintiffs will be joined by prominent journalists and bloggers in a round table discussion. Audience members will be able to call in and submit questions to this panel via social media.
We have several goals with this call:
1. Provide you access for questions to the NDAA legal team and plaintiffs.
2. Overcome media apathy and get this landmark case in view of the general public.
3. Get your public support asking for a permanent injunction from Judge Forrest and demanding that President Obama NOT appeal if we win.
4. Discuss other ways you can be involved!
This case and Judge Forrest have brought hope to thousands of people around the world. Her ruling may be the strongest ruling in favor of the people and for civil liberties in over a decade. Let's ensure we win.
We hope you can join us! We will provide instructions for submitting your questions to panelists soon! Thank you for helping us win back critical rights and liberties. Please invite your friends!
