Thanks for that original clip from the movie, "The Great Dictator." It would be wondeerful to see that movie again.
Charlie Chaplin was greatly admired and respected as an actor in the US before the 1950s and the McCarthy Period. When I was in grammar school, we were shown silent movies by Chaplin as a treat just about every few weeks.
During the 1950s Americans were so intimidated and confused about communism that they did not recognize well-known excerpts taken from the US Declaration of Independence. Some college political science classes had projects performing surveys, asking people to sign petitions that were made up exclusively from the Declaration of Independence. Most people refused to sign these petitions in the belief that they were communist propaganda!
