The essay is simplified for an average reader. The longer view of Prouty and Douglass is accurate and perceptive. But my goal was to impart a general sense to the uninitiated. I agree with your criticism, and referenced Prouty and Douglass as sources for deeper understanding. Holding the essay to essay required sacrifices.
