A. I had begun investigation of Mr. Mason some weeks prior to [sic]
a confidential informant had advised me that Mr. Mason who was
a licensed gun dealer here in Dallas, was engaged in under the
counter dealings with stolen firearms and machine guns, and
bombs of one kind or another.

April 1, 1964 Memorandum from SAC, DALLAS, to DIRECTOR, FBI,
regarding the Minutemen.

On 2/11/64, FRANK ELLSWORTH, ATTU, Dallas, Texas, advised SA
RICHARD L. WIEHL that subsequent to the arrest of JOHN THOMAS MASEN
on 11/20/63 for violation of the Federal Firearms Act, MASEN was taken
to the ATTU offices for questioning. During the questioning, it was
determined that MASEN was of strong "right-wing" beliefs and
inclinations. MASEN stated that there was in the Dallas area a small
"elite group" of patriots who were arming for the defense of the
country inasmuch as the Government was being infiltrated by Communists
and a patriot could no longer look to his Government for protection.
MASEN did not state the name of this "elite group," but left the
definite impression it was local in nature.
ELLSWORTH advised subsequent to the above conversation MASEN has
obtained attorneys, led by HARRY STANFIELD, Dallas, who are noted for
strong right-wing inclinations. MASEN has not permitted interview on
advice of his attorneys and has even declined to interview by parole
authorities.
On 3/17/64, ELLSWORTH advised MASEN is still awaiting trial and
MASEN's trial will probably commence about the first of May, 1964.
Patrolman PRESTON SNOGA, Irving, Texas, PD, was contacted at
his residence, 2517 DeWitt Street, Irving, and furnished the following
information to SA WIEHL on 2/11/64:
SNOGA advised he had known JOHN MASEN since approximately February,
1963, and that during the last few months of this acquaintanceship had
furnished information concerning MASEN's activities to ATTU, Dallas,
Texas. MASEN's activities, he advised, included changing semi-automatic
weapons to fully automatic weapons. He advised MASEN is strictly in
the gun business for the money he can make. MASEN is full of a lot of
"big talk" which he never substantiated. MASEN told SNOGA he had been
contacted by Cuban revolutionists for the purpose of supplying guns
and ammunition. MASEN also advised him that "Minutemen" and John
Birchers in the Dallas area had contacted him for the purpose of
buying ammunition. MASEN never mentioned the names or locations of
these individuals. MASEN never advised SNOGA that he was himself a
member of a John Birch Society or "Minutemen." It was SNOGA's
impression that MASEN was not a member of either of these
organizations, if, in fact, he was in contact with them. This
impression was based primarily on the fact that MASEN was more
interested in money than in political beliefs.
