I amended that first post since its not true the Russians abandoned their entire moon effort.
BUt I should add that after Kennedy's speech, there was an amendment in the house to make sure no money would go to NASA if the RUssians shared the program.
And its true, that once LBJ took over NSAM 271 was dead and buried.
Tom Hanks favorite, the Moon Doggle, was on.
If only he would go there.
