Yes, the passage from Twain is lovely. I remember reading the story in school (time was when you could actually be given something like that to read in school). I also am led to think of Borges' exploration of the labyrinths of consciousness. Or even of something like "The Matrix" (to draw from popular culture).
But I have a question, too. Perception, etymologically speaking, implies "total grasp" ('per' in this case meaning 'through/thorough'). At its limit, that would seem to indicate framelessness. But at the risk of stating the obvious to the sophisticated, such a notion of frameless perception seems like a perfect candidate for deconstruction.
Perhaps a frame can be shattered. But would it not be replaced by another frame, perhaps larger, perhaps entirely different, but a frame nonetheless?
If it weren't, then are we still speaking of perception? (I end in the interrogative mode.)
