Legally speaking, the rifle found on the sixth floor was a German Mauser, as that is what those who found it (officers Boone and Weitzman) swore to in their affidavits. The Carcano couldn't even have been introduced into the record in any honest courtroom, since there was no legal record of it being found, and thus no legal chain of possession.
I agree that it makes little sense for there to have been a Mauser found in the TSBD. It also makes little sense for sophisticated conspirators to plant a nearly pristine bullet, and ascribe seven separate wounds to it. As Vincent Salandria first suggested, it appears the conspirators wanted us to know there was a conspiracy. Maybe they like to brag. Maybe they have a warped sense of humor.
