I heard from well placed Palestinians that Abbas and co were summond to the meeting with Kerry some weeks ago and given a list and told this is what they will say. No negotiations. Period. A press release was put out by State which was pure fiction of the meeting. The Palestinians also said that Abbas and the others in the meeting did not have any authority to agree to anything. So they are not buying what the State department is selling. If the US is pulling these sorts of stunts they must be feeling under pressure too to get it all wrapped up asap. Why?
Clearly the BDS movement is biting now. And it seems to me Europe has quite a bit more leverage than has been the case in the past. The US still has the funding and the lunatic Christian rightwingnuts pushing their agenda. The income from the Jewish diaspora is shrinking every year. Most Jews still don't want to live in Israel. More Jews each year are no longer identifying with the Israeli project. Emigration from Israel is getting higher each year. While Israel itself struggles to keep their humanity in dealing with their African immigrants and refugees though there has always been a racist element between the Ashkenazis and Sephardis and de facto segregation. It is not at all a homogenous society with a common purpose. Israel didn't get their way with Iran though they are still trying.
One thing is certain is that the Palestinians will be shafted once again. Any one in a position to help them have been removed, neutralised or are otherwise occupied in fighting for their lives. The rest are busy supporting Israel. But also no matter what happens just the mere existence of the Palestinians and their visible dispossession will continue to blight any viable peaceful future there. Israel will need to share if it is to survive at all.
