Reminds me of the money laundering prosecution of Tom DeLay here in Travis County, Texas which was reversed on appeal. The "conservative" Republicans were funneling corporate money to Texas political candidates, which was illegal at the time. In my opinion that appeal was the official flat-lining of US campaign finance reform efforts.
Even though DeLay expressed an interest in suing Travis County after he won his appeal, I doubt it will ever happen, because that would give the well-meaning individuals involved with the prosecution a golden opportunity to explain (again) the evidence against DeLay.
