We have already offered to host - unaltered and untouched - all of the EF archives free of charge and with John retaining all copyright at all times in the event he closes it. John didn't respond to the repeated offer. His non-reaction undoubtedly has to do with historical reasons to do with our bust up there, which I understand - but even so the thought of all those archives disappearing out of spite strikes me a petty and small-minded.
Anyway, my guess is that John might be pushing for donations from members - hence the cost figure he mentioned.
Do to the way I was booted out of the EF, I'll shed no tears. It seems to me, however, this is about the fifth time I've heard the announcement it was to close. I find the 'reason' odd. While $1500 is not nothing, it is well within Simkin's means, and I'm sure several of the regulars have money, if asked. In the past he always claimed to not want to deal with the fighting and infighting - but now its money. Color me skeptical.
