We have some strange domestic property occupancy laws here in the UK. They make it pretty difficult to evict squatters who occupy an otherwise non-occupied property and refuse requests by the owner or anyone else to leave. I haven't got all the details to hand but briefly, a strict and convoluted procedure has to be gone through involving the courts, which makes it impossible to regain vacant possession in less than about 2-3 months from its start. Force (in the form of the police and court appointed bailiffs only) can only be used on successful completion of the process and any attempted use of force in the meantime is likely to land the perpetrator in prison. In this case the owners of the property - that prissy but dearly beloved bureaucratic NGO the 'National Trust' - seem to have whizzed through the process in double-quick time.
In the USA one would have no warning when the SWAT team came - if you were black or progressive, perhaps coming-in shooting - and certainly within hours of some complaint/report that you/anyone were in a home not owned or rented by them....the absolute coverse of the inverse. One has no right to shelter in the USA unless you pay for it [maybe]. I don't want to go into it all, but I was removed from an apartment I was fully paid-up for, because I was politically 'incorrect' [during First Gulf War when all other put a flag in the window, I put up a protest sign].....in that case I was 'given' 3 days to secure court protection - and lost. But then the USA has always been neo-fascist about money and property. I remember when I lived in Holland how squaters could often stay years and years until they were peaceably removed. How civilized compared to the USA.
