Bigger Than Watergate: The Cover-Up That Succeeded
#6
In 2005, another retired FBI agent--Paul Daly, 64--claimed that Mark Felt was actually part of a group of FBI agents who together comprised "Deep Throat."

The man who outed himself last week as "Deep Throat" worked with three other high-ranking FBI officials to leak information on the Watergate investigation to The Washington Post, a retired FBI agent has claimed. The revelation casts Mark Felt... as the leader of a clandestine group that fought White House efforts to contain the investigation. Mr Daly identified the others - all deceased - as Richard Long, chief of the FBI's white-collar crimes section during Watergate, Robert Kunkel, agent-in-charge of the Washington field office, which led the Watergate burglary investigation, and Charles Bates, who was assistant director of the FBI's criminal investigative division.

SA Bates especially had a knack for being where the action was.

--In 1969, Charles Bates was Special Agent at the Chicago office of the FBI when police killed Black Panthers Fred Hampton and Mark Clark while they were sleeping.

--In 1972, Bates was initially in charge of the FBI's investigation into the Watergate break-in.

--Charles Bates, whose job as assistant director of the General Investigative Division would have given him direct supervisory authority ... over the investigation into Arthur Bremer's shooting of George Wallace (though the Washington field office didn't have direct responsibility for the investigation of the Wallace shooting.)

--After being transferred to the San Francisco office in 1973, Bates was in charge of the FBI's investigation into the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst by the Symbionese Liberation Army(SLA).

--In 1975, his office was in charge of the Federal investigation into the attempted assassination of President Ford by Sara Jane Moore, despite the fact Moore was recruited to be an informant for the FBI by Bates himself. According to Moore,

"When I was getting ready to go public regarding my spying activities, a journalist attempting to verify some facts was told by the FBI that if the story appeared I would be in danger. This warning was repeated to me by the FBI with the additional suggestion that I should leave town. Charles Bates told me that of course they couldn't stop me from talking, but that I was placing myself in danger if the story appeared. He stated that at any rate he was not going to allow the FBI to be embarrassed. If there was anything they didn't like in the story they would simply see that it was edited out, that they had done that before, that he had "friends" on that particular paper somewhat higher up than the reporter level."
