David, NOT ONLY CAN THEY, BUT they sometimes DO!.... Something not far from that on a smaller scale happened to me. I went into bankruptcy when I was attacked by the hidden hand - all my money seized; all I owned carted away to be auctioned by the Marshall. The Bankruptcy was the only way to get my physical things back.....I discharged all my debts [I thought], but later learned one student loan was not dischargable just by being listed and 'discharged' by the Bankruptcy Judge - but one had to sprinkle pixie dust in the fires of the Oracles with magical incantations known only inside the Beltway...too complex to go into..but the USG can seize any and all of my assets that are of certain types [I don't want to list], including things necessary for life or to save it. I had one such seizure that left me homeless. They knew it would. The 'home' was a tent at that time. They knew exactly what they were doing. If they want, and someone with a deadly disease has been approved through any Federal or other program funds for life-saving, they can take THAT! That'll teach you for trying to get an education! I believe as it stands now student loans are exempt from all forebearance, removal in bankruptcy [changed it after I filed] if they want........ They like their steak rare....better raw....torture doesn't just go on in CIA blackholes in the USA..... Altruism/compassion died a long time ago there!
