I suppose that one may argue that it's not such a hardship for Germany to force austerity on to everyone else. After all, when they came into being circa 1954/5 all that loot of which they was many billions of dollars in todays terms, flooded back into West Germany making it more than financially sound overnight. Add to that the US Marshall Plan funding that also benefitted Germany to act as a bulwark against Soviet Communism and they have effectively had it rosy all those years.
