I guess some of the early MKULTRA operations did take place in the Bay Area, with contract scientists using hookers to administer LSD to their clients and report results.
From my light reading into the subject, I found there was a link between Manson and the Process Church of the Final Judgment, and that latter might have been in contact with Sirhan Sirhan. These overlapping murder cults seemed to be using the same LSD produced by an LA-area lab, with the brand name Orange Windowpane (or Orange Sunshine). The lab disappeared a little suddenly, and some people claimed it was run by the US govt. There is also a rumor that the Tate murders were filmed and the footage forwarded to the appropraite entities.
The Process Church followed in the footsteps of the later People's Temple and relocated, in their case, to Yucatan, after RFK. The legacy of the mind control kill cults was allegedly taken up by a group known as the Zodiac Killer and others.
Anton LeVay's Church of Satan in San Francisco doesn't seem like anything more than a slightly controversial private initiative that was used by the media and intel for various purposes.
It's interesting to note Owsley worked for JPL, according to the Examiner piece. L. Ron Hubbard claimed Naval Intelligence had sent him to infiltrate Jack Parson's "black magic ring" in an earlier decade. Michael Aquino, who broke with ChurchOfSatan to form Temple of Set, has been called a military intel agent many times, and I'm not sure he even denies it anymore. Also an interesting coincidence, Hubbard's ChurchOfScientology engaged in something called Operation Freakout to silence critics, but after Operation Chaos had mostly wrapped up.
I'd assume any operation kill rock stars (and many at the age of 27, for some reason) was associated with the thrill kill cult operations. Running both operations blind would have been unneccessary and a waste of resources. even though they probably did branch out into other projects afterwards (Jonestown and Hilltown on one side and assassination squads masquerading as Son-of-Sam Zodiac serial killers on another).
