Possibly the name was a consideration for Operation Blue Jay, but Pituffik or Qaanaaq was named Thule only as late as 1910 when Knud Rasmussen went through and set up a tradiing post there. It's allegedly called Thule because of the Thule Inuit culture originally inhabiting the area, people who did not have kayaks until it was reintorduced by Southwest Greenland Inuit. There are stories that on first contact the Thule Eskimo tried to ask explorers what planet they came from, they having assumed they were alone on Earth. Comer's Midden in the area shows inhabitation from the 14th century to present, minus the 17th and 18th centuries.

Of course I'm thinking along the same lines as David, that there's something to the coincidences, maybe even including Jayne Mansfield's USO tour. Greenland and Thule are a conjunction of different industrial and occult interests, Thule AFB was the launching pad for numerous secret experiments in the Arctic, did logistics for an RAF operation on the central icecap called Northice Station (according to wikipedia) and is generally very strange in being probably the largest city in Greenland but completely closed. William Cooper mentions Greenland as a source for the transmissions he decrypted or reencrypted in Behold a Pale Horse and there is UFO lore about a buried news story from the mid-70s on the discovery of a strangely warm cave with something in it on the east coast.

According to the Thule Base newsletter Thule Times, British BAe Systems took over the BMEWS in 2006. Operation Urban Shield in Alameda County, California right now has BAe as honored guest, despite the bribery scandal they're mired in back home. There seems to be a UKUS angle to BAe's involvement at Thule and in Oakland at Lawrence Livermore and elsewhere.

Thule is supposedly exactly midway between New York (or DC?) and Moscow and must've looked like a good place to put over-the-horizon radar when it was built. All of the other DEW line stations appear to be south, however.

Singing star "Mama" Cass Elliot, a celebrity of the 1960's, was not associated with the occult. Not long after moving into the stately mansion [owned and supposedly haunted by Jayne Mansfield], she went to London to tape some commercials, leaving her husband behind to oversee the redecorating of the house. Thule as semi-mythical is also a land where all sorts of dreams and anomolies can be banished, or put on cryogenic supsension for reanimation at a later time.
