If it's true of Canada and Australia too, it's an incredible thing. Tim Ball in the interview linked above discusses how terrestrial weather stations are mainly located in inappropriate places, and how the move to satellite data collection was fraught with problems. Mike Rivero of whatreallyhappened.com claims the station used for carbon dioxide measurements in Hawaii is located on the side of an active volcano, Mauna Loa. Ball says they are also placed outside air conditioning units and in parking lots.
