A Mediterranean Battlefield - Syria

One of them will be kill a lot of Russians and turn Syria into another Chechnya. The risk of a regional war is real. We can be the US/NATO war planners are working full time. Making an empire look foolish in front of its vassal states is a dangerous move indeed.

Yes, I agree. US planners will be looking at ways to hurt Russia. One key strategy might be to provide the latest shoulder fired AA missiles and other goodies to attack Russian aircraft - as they did with Stingers in Afghanistan. Of course, the problem with this is that Russia has advanced AA missiles too, and all they need do is provide them to the Syrian Army to use against US and "coalition" aircraft. It's a very dangerous situation.

They were used against helicopters which are inherently unstable. I don't see them being used in Syria and the planes that are being used have defences for such things.

However, the Turkish proxies are trying some thing here:
Quote:No: 269, 05 October 2015, Press Release Regarding the Violation of Turkish Airspace by a Russian Federation Aircraft

A fighter aircraft belonging to the Russian Federation violated Turkish airspace at 12:08 on 3 October 2015 south of the Yayladağı/Hatay region. The Russian aircraft exited Turkish airspace into Syria after it was intercepted by two F-16s from the Turkish Air Force, which were conducting patrols in the region.

The Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry summoned the Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Ankara to the Ministry and strongly protested this violation, demanded that any such violation not be repeated and affirmed that, otherwise, the Russian Federation will be responsible for any undesired incident that may occur.

The Foreign Minister called the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov to reiterate the views stated above and express our reaction. The Foreign Minister also held telephone calls with his US, French, Italian and UK counterparts to evaluate the situation. The Foreign Minister will also consult with the NATO Secretary General and his German counterpart.

And recall Putin's conversation earlier this week with the Turkish Ambassador when he had a very frank and fearless conversation :

Plus remember Turkey is NATO. Though the rest of NATO have enough to manage with the refugees
