Let's talk about Israel...
From: Brasscheck TV <news@brasschecktv.com>

Israel...the perennial victim.

Or is it?

Here's a very different version
of history from the one that
the US news media has rammed
down American throats for
the last 45 years.

Note: This version comes from
a very surprising source...

I hope everyone takes the time to listen to Miko Peled, an Israeli War Veteran and son of an Israeli Army General. He presents a view of the history of the Jewish-Palestinian conflict which we have not been familiar with, but which rings clearly with the sound of truth. There is hope that there will be peace in Israel for all its people in striving for democracy and equality.

James F. Tracy: When Propaganda Masquarades as News
From: Global Research E-Newsletter <newsletter@globalresearch.ca>

When Propaganda Masquarades as News
By Prof. James F. Tracy
Global Research, November 24, 2012
Url of this article:

The week-long Israeli onslaught against largely defenseless Palestinians in Gaza that began on November 14 provides a basis for assessing how Western corporate media whitewash the war crimes of America's foremost ally in the Middle East. There are three often intertwined techniques consciously applied to such news coveragehistorical context, sourcing, and objectification of the enemy to be targeted. Such practices can readily transform journalism into propaganda that acts to abet such crimes while at the same time allowing journalistic institutions to still claim the mantle of "objectivity."

Such methods are on full display in the reportage of Israel's most recent operation in Gaza. The use of such propaganda fits within a broader campaign of media disinformation that subdues potential outrageparticularly in the USover Israel's overwhelming use of force against an oppressed and vulnerable people, most of whom are civilians.

Meaningful historical context for understanding Israel's aggression is almost entirely absent from most Western news coverage of the event. If present, such context would illuminate Israeli government officials' true motivations for a military venture that involved 750 airstrikes in four days alone. "'Operation Pillar of Defense,'" Nile Bowie observes,

launched just months away from Israel's elections, is a calculated component of the Netanyahu government's strategy to topple Hamas and continue absorbing Palestinian territory. Decades of occupation and apartheid have shaped the current scenario; Israel has dehumanized an entire people by seizing their land and forcing them into prison-like ghettoes. Adherents to political Zionism have shown contempt for a genuine political solution to the Palestinian conflict, and the Netanyahu administration is poised to crush all opposition to the Jewish state.[1]

Major Western media focused instead on the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) November 14 assassination of Hamas leader and Palestinian hero Ahmed al-Jabari, while blatantly omitting the fact that he was also a major figure in negotiations for a long-term truce between Hamas and Israel freshly brokered by Egypt. Hours before Hamas strongman Ahmed Jabari was assassinated," Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported the day following the assassination, "he received the draft of a permanent truce agreement with Israel, which included mechanisms for maintaining the cease-fire in the case of a flare-up between Israel and the factions in the Gaza Strip."[2]

Apart from Western alternative media such critical details were quickly dispatched to the memory hole. Major news outlets almost systematically relied on Israeli government, military, and intelligence sources to shape its coverage, where Jabari was reviled as "the commander of the military wing of Hamas." Reuters, for example, proceeded to source an IDF spokeswoman who proceeded to lay out the dominant frame for the coverage. "This is an operation against terror targets of different organizations in Gaza," she declared. "Jaabari [sic] had a lot of blood on his hands.' Other militant groups including Islamic Jihad were on the target list."[3]

A similar report in the UK Telegraph taking the tack of Israeli official pronouncements beings with the lead, "Ahmed Jabari probably didn't event hear the missile that killed him, launched from a drone in the skies over Gaza City as he drove an ordinary saloon car through a quiet residential street."[4] Emphasis on Jabari's military status and alleged criminal and terrorist activities invariably legitimates Israel's flagrant barbarism. Further, by holding Jabari up as a dangerous renegade supposedly representative of the Palestinian people the stage is set for attacks on civilians that are much more readily rationalized in the public mind.

Honest contextualization of the crisis leading readerships to greater understanding would involve consulting and publicizing both Israeli and Palestinian perspectivesan undertaking Western journalists are now adept at through their routine discussions with Syrian "activists" reporting on the alleged atrocities committed by the Syrian Army against Syrian citizens and the gallant Free Syrian Army "rebels" in that close by theatre.

In the case of Gaza, however, such media are apparently unable to locate well-heeled Palestinian "human rights activists" exiled in London who receive routine reports from like-minded "activists" on the ground in Gaza. If such activists are functioning their reports are not seeing the light of day.

Press coverage further underlines what clearly does not exist in Gaza: a parity of deadly force between the IDF and Palestinians and, moreover, Israel's victimization at the hands of militant Palestinians. Terms such as "clash," "conflict," and "violence" misleadingly suggest exactly these conditions and anticipate permissible actions in a field of battle provided for under the Geneva Conventions. Such terms contrast greatly with aerial attacks using state-of-the-art weaponry on unarmed women and children.

Nevertheless, CBS News presented a timeline of events in Gaza that fit well alongside Israel's public relations maneuvers seeking to downplay the IDF's overt aggression. "Israel launches Operation Pillar of Defense in response to days of rocket fire outside of Hamas-ruled Gaza. The offensive, which included 20 airstrikes, resulted in the assassination of Ahmed Jabari, the military commander of Hamas."[5]

Another failure to provide adequate context and sourcing involves Israel's relentless drive to build more settlements on Palestinian lands under Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak while firmly refusing Palestinians a right of return. This is one of the most essential and yet misunderstood pieces of the puzzle for understanding Israeli-Palestinian relations. Yet such important historical factors are largely devoid from the prevailing Western media frame through which the Gaza tragedy is viewed.

A LexisNexis Academic search in newspaper and magazine articles and broadcast transcripts for November 13 to November 21 using the terms "Israel," "Gaza," and "Hamas" yields 2,203 citations. Of these, less than ten percent (205) mention "settlements," while barely two percent reference "human rights."

Given the relevant history and facts most observers would conclude that at the end of the day the leading conceptsland rights, human dignity, justice and respectmust be understood and reconciled before there can be peace in Palestine. The fact that much of the American public especially is misinformed or unaware of the profuse atrocities and injustices committed with its tax dollars and tacitly in its name attests to the continued centrality of propaganda, made all the more effective in its thoroughgoing attempt to masquerade as news.

"The Palestinian Future is In Jordan": Israeli deputy Defense Minister

By IMEMC & Agencies

June 14, 2013 "Information Clearing House - Israeli TV, Channel 1, aired an interview with Israeli deputy Defense Minister, Member of Knesset (MK) Danny Danon, who said that there will never be a Palestinian State, and that the Palestinians are "settlers", should be part of Jordan.
During the interview, Danon said that "the Public should not be misled", as Israel would never allow the establishment of a Palestinian state, whether the United States sends envoys or not, whether it presents initiatives or not.

When asked if Israel would "annex" the West Bank, Dannon said that Israel will not do so, but will continue its settlements activities "on vacant lands in the West Bank", and will act onto turning the Palestinian areas into "settlements".

"Jews in the West Bank aren't settlers anymore, they are citizens of the state of Israel", the Israeli official said, "Israel will turn the Palestinians into settlers under Jordanian authority, and this is that…"

He further stated that several Israeli members of Knesset agree with his opinions despite the fact they do not go public about them.

Talking to Channel 1, deputy Knesset spokesperson Dr. Ahmad Tibi, leader of Ta'al Party, stated that the statements of Dannon are very serious and dangerous.

"Dannon is the most truthful extremist' in the Israeli government of Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu", Tibi said, "Unlike other officials, he does not hide the dangerous intentions and plans of the Israeli government; he does now hide his extremist ideology".

Dr. Tibi added that many Israeli government ministers and officials, including Netanyahu himself, agree with the opinions of Dannon, and are deliberately placing obstacles in front of U.S Secretary of State, John Kerry, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and any official or government that tries to restart peace talks.

Furthermore, Knesset Member, Ofer Shelah, of Yesh Atid (There Is Future) party, stated that "Israel is becoming the new South Africa", the Maan News Agency have reported.

"What Dannon is saying is similar to what white settlers used to say in South Africa" Shelah stated, "Jewish settlements in the West Bank are a major obstacle to any peace agreement, the Israeli occupation corrupts the Israeli society".

Engineering Consent For The Ethnic Cleansing Of Palestine
Idea of a Two-state Solution has Reached 'Dead End,' Bennett Says

Economy minister says Israel must stop trying to solve the problem and 'live with it;' likens Palestinian problem to shrapnel injury in the backside; Chief Palestinian negotiator Erekat: Israel officially declared death of two-state solution.

By Barak Ravid and Jack Khoury
June 17, 2013 "Information Clearing House - "Haaretz" -- The idea of establishing a Palestinian state in the Land of Israel has reached a "dead end," Economy Minister Naftali Bennett said on Monday, as the double-talk from the government regarding the conflict with the Palestinians continued.
"The attempt to establish a Palestinian state in our land has ended." Bennett, a member of the government's security cabinet, said at a conference held in Jerusalem by the settler Yesha Council. Bennett made his remarks while the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's efforts to renew the peace process were underway.
Bennett emphasized that the establishment of a Palestinian state is a pointless issue and stated that the Palestinians have no right to self-determination or a state of their own between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.
"We need to move on from trying to persuade that a Palestinian state isn't appropriate to behaving like this idea is behind us," said Bennett. "Everyone who wanders around Judea and Samaria knows that what they say in the corridors of Annapolis and Oslo is detached from reality. Today there are 400,000 Israeli residents of Judea and Samaria and another 250,000 in eastern Jerusalem."
Likening the Palestinian problem to a shrapnel injury, Bennett told of a friend who suffered from shrapnel "lodged in his backside. They told him they could operate but he would remain handicapped," he said, "So he decided to keep on living with it. There are some situations when striving for perfection can lead to more harm than good."
Bennett also said that Israel should intensify construction in the settlements. "The most important thing in Land of Israel is to build, build, build," he said. "It's important that there will be an Israeli presence everywhere. Our principal problem is still Israel's leaders unwillingness to say in a simple manner that the Land of Israel belongs to the People of Israel.
"It must be said that this land has been ours for 3,000 years," he added, "there was never a Palestinian state here and we were never occupiers. The house is ours and we are residents here, not the occupiers."
A short time after economy minister's speech, Science and Technology Minister Jacob Perry from the Yesh Atid party stridently attacked Bennett.
"His declarations are undermining peace efforts and are harming … attempts to build trust between Israel and the Palestinians," said Perry. "The establishment of a Palestinian state is [in] Israel's existential interest. The concept of the two states is the single solution that will prevent the establishment of a bi-national state and the end of Zionism."
The sharp disagreement within the government regarding the Palestinian conflict was clear from the day the coalition was formed. The government's basic guidelines are missing a commitment toward implementing the two-state solution because of the objection of Habayit Hayehudi and most Likud MKs.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced several times that he adheres to the principle of two states for two people, but was insistent on making clear that Danon's remarks reflected his own personal position and not that of the government. In the past five years Netanyahu regularly avoided bringing the topic to a vote or even to a discussion at a cabinet meeting.
Several incidents occurred in recent weeks and emphasized to what extent the government is divided on this issue, and just how those who oppose to the peace process and a Palestinian state have the upper hand.
For example, speaking in front of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who is also responsible for negotiations with the Palestinians, was attacked by Habayit Hayehudi MKs who stated that her position on the matter does not represent the government position.
Several days later, Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon said in an interview to The Times of Israel that most government ministers opposed the establishment of a Palestinian state and will prevent the move if it appears on the agenda. Following Netanyahu's weak condemnation of Danon's comments, the deputy defense minister repeated them during a Channel 1 interview, and stated that the solution for a Palestinians was to be found in Jordan.
In contrast, Livni called upon Netanyahu to make the government's position on the Palestinian issue clear, and even hinted that she would consider leaving the government if there is no progress on the diplomatic front. Several days later MK Ofer Shelah (Yesh Atid) that if there isn't progress in talks with the Palestinians that Israel is likely to become like apartheid-era South Africa.
Despite Livni's comments, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat responded to Bennett's remarks on Monday by accusing the Israeli government of officially declaring the death of the two-state solution.
"Within the past few days, several high-ranking Israeli officials from the ministries of foreign affairs, defense and religious affairs have made clear statements regarding their position to actively work against the internationally endorsed two-state solution," Erekatsaid.
"These are not isolated events but a reaffirmation of political platforms and radical beliefs," he said. "Israel has officially declared the death of the two-state solution."
