Why Only [apparently] MI-5 and MI-6?
#1
MI-1 Code breaking, MI-2 Russia and Scandinavia, MI-3 Eastern Europe, MI-4 Aerial Reconnaissance, MI-5 Domestic Intelligence, now The Security Service, MI-6 Foreign Intelligence, now the Secret Intelligence service, MI-7 Propaganda and censorship, MI-8 Signals Intelligence, MI-9 Undercover operations, MI-10 Weapons and technical Analysis, MI-11 Field Intelligence, MI-12 Military Censorship, MI-13 Remains Classified, MI-14 German Intelligence, MI-15 Aerial Photography, MI-16 Scientific Intelligence, MI-17 Secretarial section, MI-18 Remains Classifed, MI-19 Extraction of information from foreign POWs MI-20 to MI-25 Remain Classified.
Most of these where small departments, and at the end of World War 2 they were mostly all merged into MI5, MI6, GCHQ, and other Classified agencies.
Most British intelligence agencies still remain classified to the general public. The only reason this information has been released is that these agencies have all now terminated activity and new agencies have replaced them.

In this matter I should add the UK is not unique. Several of the now known US intelligence and national security agencies were guarded secrets until quite recently - and a few of them are still secret both in name and in what they do! All of them keep most of their work and even defined parameters of their mandate a secret. Below are some of the known ones - others could be added - depending on definition of terms. I'm sure there are others completely in the dark......even the names unknown!

Independent agencies
United States Department of Energy
United States Department of Homeland Security
United States Department of State
United States Department of the Treasury
United States Department of Defense
United States Department of Justice
