I believe in the US it is illegal to issue a new currency.

If they're going to require people to use banks (private institutions with deposit insurance that is woefully inadequate in the case of a major banking contraction), they ought to offer banking through the Postal Service backed by the full faith and credit of the government as a number of other countries do.

I went to Norway this past summer after not having been there for quite some years. I was there for many weeks and while I intended to, I never got around to getting cash - and didn't need to - EVERY possible purchase, now matter how small, can be made with a payment card. It already is a cashless society by and large. In fact, some gas stations and other stores will not take cash.
