A Hungarian camerawoman caught on video kicking and tripping migrants near the Serbian border has offered a qualified apology for her behavior.

Petra Laszlo said in the letter published Friday in the daily Magyar Nemzet newspaper that she was "sincerely sorry for what happened," but she also sought to defend her actions.

The 40-year-old was fired by the right-wing N1TV online channel after footage of her kicking and tripping migrants Tuesday near the village of Roszke went viral on social media. Laszlo was seen sticking out her leg to trip a running man carrying a young boy, sending both crashing to the ground as the man fell on the boy. She also was seen delivering sideways kicks to the knees of a young man and a pony-tailed girl as they ran past her.

But in her letter, Laszlo sought to describe her kicks and stuck-out leg as a reasonable response to a chaotic situation. She was filming people running away from a field that police use to put newly arrived migrants on buses for asylum registration centers.

"I was scared as they streamed toward me, and then something snapped inside me," she wrote. "With the camera in my hands, I didn't see who was coming toward me. I just thought they were on the attack and I had to defend myself. It's hard to make good decisions when one is panicking."

She criticized those who condemned her on social media sites and said she had received death threats.

"I am not a heartless, child-kicking, racist camera operator. I do not deserve the political witch hunt that has been launched against me, nor do I deserve the abusive threats that often call for my death. I am just a woman, who has recently become an unemployed mother," she wrote.

Police questioned Laszlo on suspicion of disorderly conduct Thursday, released her without charge, and say the investigation is continuing. Her former employer, N1TV, regularly carries reports supportive to Jobbik, an ultranationalist party that calls for all foreigners to be deported.

Only in the deranged mind of a racist fanatic could a desperate man running by with a child and baggage in his arms be seen as being about to attack her personally. Not buying her bull shit excuse.

Fortunately, not all Hungarians are like her. Or like their current racist leader. Thousands of Vietnamese and South Americans and North Africans were given refuge there in better times.

All of the Eastern European countries are to varying degrees xenophobic and have an 'us' vs. 'them' mentality - sometimes down to the us being only family and close friends. I see it here in the Czech Republic where the few minorities are treated poorly and most foreigners are not welcome to most of the population. They have little history of immigrants, but that is NOT true for parts of Hungary nor for Romania.

Sadly, Some of these countries had collaborationist fascist governments during WW2 and the Nazi period. Some of this viewpoint is still very much in evidence. For Hungary, the relevant past, in short is the following:
The Arrow Cross Party (Hungarian: Nyilaskeresztes Párt Hungarista Mozgalom, literally "Arrow Cross Party-Hungarist Movement") was a Hungarist party led by Ferenc Szálasi, which led a government in Hungary known as the Government of National Unity from 15 October 1944 to 28 March 1945. During its short rule, ten to fifteen thousand civilians (many of whom were Jews) were murdered outright, and 80,000 people were deported from Hungary to various camps in Austria, mostly Gusen and Mauthausen.

Czech Opponents of Islam block traffic at Czech-Austrian border crossing

About a hundred demonstrators against Islam blocked traffic at the DolníDvořiště border crossing with Austria in south Bohemia on Wednesdayevening. The event, which lasted for about half an hour, was initiated bythe opposition Dawn party and the non-parliamentary Bloc Against Islam withthe aim to persuade the cabinet to send the army to protect the borderagainst refugees. Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka said on Tuesday that thestate would deploy the army in the event that the police could no longercope with the influx of migrants.

[this was one of the smaller of similar actions/protests around CZE - a majority of Czechs feel that all foreigners - including 'Western ones' should be discouraged or not allowed; they feel even stronger about those from non-Western and non-white countries. Racism is alive and well here, sadly. Despite most Czechs being atheists, they are very hostile to Islam. They had long been isolated from any outsiders other than the Russians and a few Vietnamese guest workers and still feel uncomfortable with strangers who don't speak their language or have their background and habits.]

Yes. Some one we knew from Chile in the aftermath of the coup tried to seek asylum in the Spanish embassy. He climbed the wall at night to hide during the curfew and presented himself to the ambassador but he had climbed the wall of the Romanian embassy by mistake. The confused ambassador granted refuge to the confused asylum seeker and got him safely out of the country to Romania. Romanian is easier to learn than Hungarian.

Hungarian fascism predates both German and Italian fascism. Like German fascism it is heavily based on hatred of Jews and Bolsheviks. Its supporters crushed the new Hungarian soviet republic which was established in Hungary after WW1 in the aftermath of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
