Geopolitical Cold Spot: US Forces in Antarctica?
#1
Is it true the US has military forces stationed in Antarctica currently? Isn't that a violation of the UN Treaty on Antarctica? I know Byrd was there prior to the treaty, and Fletcher Prouty mentions US forces there in Guns of Dallas (I presume in 1963). Does Operation Deep Freeze exist or is it conspiracy theory?

Yes, Helen military activity is banned there from 1961, specifically from 60 degrees south, and absolutely NO nuclear activity is permitted. However naval operations are if the are conducted on the high seas. Most military presence there is under the guise of 'scientific research'. Like securing the opium, oil and gas interests in Iraq and Afghanistan is done under the guise of 'bringing democracy'

And Operation Deep Freeze is not conspiracy theory and is on going. Most work has been contracted out to Raytheon. More info here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Deep_Freeze
"The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it." Karl Marx

"He would, wouldn't he?" Mandy Rice-Davies. When asked in court whether she knew that Lord Astor had denied having sex with her.

“I think it would be a good idea” Ghandi, when asked about Western Civilisation.

Just after WW2, Admiral Byrd [yes, related, distantly, to the Byrd of TSBD fame] took a rather large and odd military contingent to Antarctica disguised as a scientific mission - and left in fear, fast, and prematurely. The documentary evidence of the trip have never been released [are still classified].....one can find both truths and invented stories about this on the internet. The true ones are strange enough!!!

And how could anyone even THINK of accusing the USA of breaking international law - ever! Smile
"Let me issue and control a nation's money and I care not who writes the laws. - Mayer Rothschild
"Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience! People are obedient in the face of poverty, starvation, stupidity, war, and cruelty. Our problem is that grand thieves are running the country. That's our problem!" - Howard Zinn
"If there is no struggle there is no progress. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and never will" - Frederick Douglass

Thank you Magda! I'm looking it up right now. McMurdo is New Zealand's base, right?
