ASIC needs spycatchers

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission won't say if it suspects spies have been bugging its offices, but it's not taking any chances. The corporate monitor yesterday confirmed it was looking to hire a team of specialist bug-sweepers to ferret out listening devices that might have found their way into its ostensibly secure offices. The confirmation of the big sweep comes just a month after a senior official from the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation warned of a rise in foreign electronic espionage efforts targeting local corporations.

Described in ASIC documents as "technical surveillance countermeasures", the hunt for spying equipment is understood to follow a recently completed series of threat assessments of all ASIC offices that produced "highly classified" information. Most counter-surveillance exercises are normally conducted under tight secrecy so as not to alert eavesdroppers that they are being hunted.

But for the first time, ASIC has been forced to go to a public tender to hire its spycatchers in order to comply with new procurement rules set down for agencies under the Financial Management and Accountability Act. An ASIC spokeswoman declined to say whether the watchdog believed it had been targeted by buggers, but confirmed the watchdog was soliciting commercial bids for the work.
The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. This act is the essential condition for any kind of self-knowledge.
