I don't seem to have the facility for attachments - could be a Mac interface problem?

Jack, go to the reply panel and below that you'll se the link titled "Go Advanced", enter that and post your message. Above that message pane is an icon of a paperclip, click that and follow the steps to search for the attachment you wish to upload from your computer.
I'm a long way from being a techie, but I tried earlier after asking the same question and it worked out fine.

I've just disabled the 'Quick Reply' box so there's no need to selected 'Go Advanced' Otherwise as per David above. You can also use the 'Manage attachments' button below the editing pane.
