Predictive or preparative?
I nourish a tentative hypothesis that the "group mind" is often prepared at a deep psychological level for planned significant coming events. The event still comes as a terrible shock, but isn't actually unthinkable. The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort.
