Joe Kennedy No Angel, but no bootlegger either...

Joe Kennedy was no angel but neither was he a bootlegger | Irish Examiner

This short article points out imo, just one of a zillion, unevidenced assertions
that go forth unchecked within the information of the Kennedys and the assassination, repeated until, they are taken as fact but that still does not prove that they are the truth.....bDance

Great article, Beans. Not to change the subject, but, IMO it tends to also point out the improbability that the old man was "black-mailable" for anything that he (or his sons) had, in fact, done in the past. As the article [paraphrased] says:

"He was no angel. His enemies were numerous, were well financed, and were highly motivated to smear him [and them]."

Yet, his enemies were unable to use boot-legging at all since even the FBI files had no report of any such activity on his part. The FBI did, as we now know, have tons of information on other aspects of all of their lives. Yet, IMO, there was a profound combination of both fear and respect for Old Joe. He was not a person with whom one casually crossed swords expecting to triumph or even survive such an encounter.

hi greg; my thought was, after having read as all,and seen so many accusations lauded towards him, if no documentation, no proof about such as bootlegging, which has been so widely repeated and accepted, if nothing, then how much more, is sheer undulterated b/s that people have made up in trying to insert themselvs within a book. article as close to, and or knowlegeable , same old, no proof no documentation, then whatever should not be nor can it be instilled into any history,as being correct..cause it ain't :kraka: take care best b

I agree, Bernice. There is a gross lack of evidence to support many claims offered about the Kennedy's alleged nefarious activities...perhaps because the majority of those claims are untrue, irrelevant, or both.

I agree there's been a whole lot of rubbish written about Joe Kennedy. Certainly no saint but certainly not the villain made famous by the anti Kennedy press that's for sure.

So, where did the Kennedy money come from? My bet is on insider trading. But remember too they could only get Capone on tax evasion. Maybe he was involved in it a bit.

I think Kennedy was a man of his time no more or no less mate. Help, I'd love to know how many more affluent Americans cashed in on all manner of illicit trading.

I agree Seamus. I'd love to know more too about a lot of wealthy families. You know what they say 'Behind every great fortune there is a great crime'.

Remember, back during Old Joe's insider trading days, there was no such thing as "anti-insider trading" laws as there was no Securities Exchange Commission. Those laws and that regulatory body came about in response to the activities that eventually led to Black Friday and the crash of Wall Street. Roosevelt then appointed Joe Kennedy to the position of the first Chairman of the Securities Exchange Commission. It was Old Joe who actually established policy that effectively reined in the Wall Street power brokers and prohibited certain forms of insider trading.

But, yes--he made a fortune on insider trading prior to it being illegal.
