1961 Rescue of Caroline Disclosed
The White House confirmed today [July 6] that Caroline Kennedy was pulled from water over her head last Thursday by a pregnant mother who leaped into a swimming pool fully clothed when she decided the child was in danger. Presidential press secretary Pierre Salinger said the President's three-year-old blonde daughter suffered no ill-effects from the incident. It was reported, however, that Caroline wondered out loud what the nice lady was doing in the swimming pool with her clothes on. It also raised the question of how the daughter of the President was allowed to paddle into a potential dangerous predicament. According to White House officials, the answer to that lies in Mrs. Kennedy's desire for a normal childhood for Caroline. Consequently, Mrs. Kennedy does not want armed Secret Service agents dogging Caroline's footsteps. Three-year-olds are constantly getting into places where it would be hard for a full-grown, armed Secret Service agent to follow anyway
