PEPPER SPRAY AT SMITHSONIAN AIR & SPACE MUSEUM[/URL]
New York City police commissioner: Police overtime has cost $1.9 million so far
Karen Wainberg and I went to Portland today to join the Occupy Wall Street event. It's been going on for a week. When we arrived there were just a few folks in Monument Square but more were gathered at their camp site about one block away. We stood on the side of the road facing traffic and held our signs and handed out flyers to passing motorists.
After a few hours more began to arrive. It was a hot day for October, 89 degrees, but seeing the buses go by with rubber necking tourists inside made it bearable. Very few people were negative as they passed us by during the 4 1/2 hours we were there. By the time we left about 75 people were protesting in the square. We heard that last night about 200-300 people had come to be a part of the Occupy Wall Street action.
Many young people either came to the square to hold a sign or to see what is going on. I handed many of them a flyer. It was good that today we had several of us there from the peace movement holding signs that connected the dots between endless war and economic crisis here at home. Many of the younger activists have been working on environmental or corporate power issues, and while they are against the war, they've not had many chances to make these important connections. So it is vital that peace movement people go into these spaces and help make these links. Everyone is totally receptive.
When I got home I saw an email from friend David Swanson, one of the leaders of the Occupy DC effort that began this week in Washington. He posted several videos like the one below on his web site and wrote this:
We intended to hold signs and sing inside the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, protesting its promotion of unmanned drones, missiles, and bombs, including its sponsorship by and promotion of weapons corporations. We don't have any museums promoting health coverage or education or retirement security.
We had marched from the Freedom Plaza and McPherson Square occupations, taking over the streets of DC. The museum knew we were coming. Some of our group got in and dropped a banner. Hundreds of us did not. Instead, we were greeted at the door with cans of pepper spray.
There were three sets of entrance doors. I was among the first to open the third set of doors. A guard shook a can of pepper spray in front of me and demanded that we back out. But a dozen feet away at the second set of doors, people were staggering out and collapsing in pain, having been pepper sprayed in the face. I started to go toward them, but began coughing and vomiting. A lot of people were effected, directly or -- like me -- indirectly by the pepper spray.
Anonymous said...This video certainly shows a different version from what the "official" mainstream media (CNN) is displaying complete with their Smithsonian spokeswoman Linda St. Thomas:
"Some started to enter the museum to demonstrate against displays of military drones used during the war in Afghanistan. St. Thomas said that one of the protesters pushed a museum security guard against a wall, prompting another guard to respond with pepper spray to force demonstrators outside."

American Spectator Editor Admits to Being Agent Provocateur at D.C. Museum
The following photograph taken by opednews.com shows a confrontation in the lobby of the National Air and Space Museum between two individuals and an officer shortly before video shows officers with the Museum's security forces rush outside indiscriminately pepper-spraying numerous individuals. It appears that one of the two in the confrontation with the security officer is Patrick Howley, Assistant Editor of The American Spectator. [See the following photograph in which Howley's Facebook Profile Photo is side-by-side with the person pictured at the Air and Space Museum] Immediately after the incident began hitting the newswires Howley published a "Breaking News" story with The American Spectator online in which he reveals that he had consciously infiltrated the group on Friday with the intent to discredit the movement. He states that "as far as anyone knew I was part of this cause a cause that I had infiltrated the day before in order to mock and undermine in the pages of The American Spectator and I wasn't giving up before I had my story." Police Pepper Spray Peaceful Protesters in Washington, DC
Nearly 1,000 peaceful protesters marched to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum today to stage a nonviolent die-in under the drone exhibit which represents the glorification of robotic warfare and the mass killing of innocent civilians.
Upon entering the doors to the free public institution, demonstrators were denied entry, physically beaten back by Smithsonian Protection Service security officers and at least a dozen were pepper sprayed. The cloud of pepper spray was so thick that it hit nearby tourists and a female security officer.
The police closed the museum and have been falsely telling the public that the building was closed due to a bomb threat.

Peter,I disagree that this was a mis-step.The people were in the middle of a general assembly. They are operating under the premise that ALL voices are equal.Rep.Lewis walked into the middle of this assembly, and wanted to make a statement. The protesters were not only correct to deny this assembly distraction, but showed strength in respectively saying so.I think Rep.Lewis realized this also,as he seemed to agree with the dissenting speakers position.Really, this was more a problem of just bad timing on Rep. Lewis attempt to show support for OWS.

One of the most interesting aspects of Occupy Wall Street (#ows) is the work it is doing to set up permanent occupations in EVERY city (over 1,000 locations globally, and growing) of note.NOTE: If you want to help document occupy process for others to copy, put it on MiiU. Here's a quick overview:
Navigation of the complex legalities of sleeping/living in an urban, public space (park, square) Every major city has a thicket of regulations in place to prevent people from congregating, let alone sleep overnight.
Defusing provocations from police to prevent more aggressive action. The police made a couple of attempts at provocations already (lots of pepper spray, lots of beatings with batons, and lots of arrests) in NYC. So far, the protesters just took it and didn't fight back.
Acquiring provisions. On-line support has helped the protest acquire many of the food, water, and other items it needs (although its unclear how many locations get anything approaching the level of support seen in NYC).
Food preparation. By keeping the permanent group small, the need for food/food prep stays manageable.
Shelter. Most locations selected prohibit tents. Lots of variants (cardboard, tarps, etc.) have emerged. This is going to be tougher in winter in the northern climes, but not undoable with small numbers of overnight residents.
Defense. Currently, the occupy movement is strictly adhering to the regulations and non-violence to avoid being ejected from their locations. The best medium term defense is a flashmob.
Media. 24x7x365
Local Governance. Open source. Consensus needed. Leaderless (pitch in if something needs doing, but don't assume you are running the show).
A permanent camp in each location means that there is a gathering point for HUGE protests in the future (quick response to shocks/events/etc.). Also, protests that span hundreds or thousands of cities simultaneously. Pretty cool dynamic developing: a protest Horde?

OWS protesters fear movement is being turned into a Democratic election campaign front Paul Joseph Watson
Infowars.com
Monday, October 10, 2011
The "official" Occupy Wall Street website has publicly formed an alliance with yet another Obama campaign front group, the New Jersey branch of the American Federation of Teachers, the parent organization of which spent $1.9 million on Obama's 2008 election campaign.
"For OWS to accept an endorsement from Union Bosses (Who interestingly enough are the same people that OWS began protesting) makes them lose so much credibility," wrote one respondent.
"I actually was going to join one of the protests in my state because I believe in freedom and believe that corporations, INCLUDING UNIONS, should not be in control of government and politicians like they currently are. Union bosses are also the people giving politicians (specifically Obama) MILLIONS to do what is best for them and only them. If OWS steered free from endorsements from any groups, especially ones with money, they would have doubled, tripled, even quadrupled the amount of people they currently have attending these events. Now all the people attending these things just look like democrats who want more social programs and want MORE government control. Don't fall for these people that try to act like they care. OWS will fail, and fail very rapidly I might add, if they accept endorsements from the people causing the problems. Stick to the principles of freedom, free market, NOT corporatism and crony capitalism. Don't accept endorsements from the people causing the problems. Obama came out and supported OWS today, BUT HE IS THE PROBLEM. He is the one FOR the bailout of the banks and the wall street crooks. Don't accept their lies and their attempts to act like they truly care, because they don't. All they want is your support for a next election. You are destined to fail and accomplish nothing if you accept support from the enemy."
"Occupy Wall Street is well on its way to being co-opted by them all," added another. It's clear that many OWS protesters are growing increasingly frustrated with brazen attempts to co-opt their "leaderless" and "non-partisan" movement by lobbying groups that are little more than campaign fronts for the Wall Street puppet Obama. The encampments in New York and other areas are beginning to be dominated by "General Assembly" meetings where Union operatives pose as leaders and manufacture consensus amongst the demonstrators. These gatherings are also starting to take on a bizarre cult-like tone, with participantsengaging in weird ritualistic chants and hand gestures. As Webster Tarpley has outlined, the movement risks being hijacked by infiltrators who have set up steering committees with the purpose of manipulating demonstrators "into a posture of supporting the presidential candidacy of Wall Street puppet Obama."
