The container ship Rena is still stranded on the Astrolabe Reef off the coast of New Zealand leaking tonnes of oil onto local beaches.
"This event has come to a scale where it is New Zealand's most significant maritime environmental disaster," said New Zealand's Environment Minister Nick Smith.
Salvage experts who had been pumping oil from the ship were forced to return to shore due to heavy seas.
Teams of workers are cleaning up oil which has landed on Mount Maunganui beach, contaminating the area and coating sea birds and animals....."
