Another workaround to find threads using browser engines:

Search for +"deep politics forum" +"user name" +keyword

This search will often find the thread number you want, but with the wrong junk before it.

So, when the search engine finds the thread you want, note where the thread number starts, and cut and paste the thread number onwards section only at the end of the following link:

http://deeppoliticsforum.com/forums/showthread.php?

As an example, I performed a google search and found the John Yoo thread listed as follows: http://www.deeppoliticsforum.com/forums/...-3253.html

Hitting this returns junk.

So, I took the 3253.html and added it as follows:

http://deeppoliticsforum.com/forums/show...?3253.html

This new url loads the relevant thread.

The system is set to reset the 'new posts' at midnight either central Euopean time or GMT. I find this annoying. If I went to bed or spent yesterday following a thread, unless someone posted on it past midnight, it is now gone. On the old Forum, there were the active posts for at least the last 48 hours, or by some [large] number of recently updated posts. I think that is a better system, especially now that more are posting new threads. Yes, one can hunt and find them, but most [and I] want to post on the recently active threads. Thanks.

In an unrelated matter gifs don't move. They are static.

I'm not ignoring this - honest. But it is far more complex than the above suggests, even though I accept it shouldn't be - arguably vBulletin are being just a wee bit toooo clever. Briefly, this is how the "todays Posts"/"New Posts" functionality works:

Casual browsers and non-logged in users will always see "Today's posts" as the first item to the left under the "Forum" menu.

This is where the tooo clever bit comes in:

Logged in users will see 'Today's Posts' on first log in, but as soon as they have moved away from the first 'Forum' menu view and then return to it, "Today's Posts" becomes "New Posts". "New Posts" runs EXACTLY the same script as the "What's New" Nav Bar button. It selects every thread with posts that the system has logged the user as either having not already opened, or not specifically marked as read, from within the original "Today's Posts" selection. It does NOT reset at midnight GMT is selects the posts/threads with a date/time stamp less than 24 hours old with reference to the users time-zone setting.

I am looking for a way to ALWAYS have a "Today's Post" sub-menu displayed but, believe it or not it involves low-level php coding and is still not at the front of the queue.

I've implemented a work-around for the 'Today's Posts' - 'New Posts' issue.

When nav-bar 'Forum' is selected, the left hand sub-menu item will now ALWAYS be 'Today's Posts'. Selecting it will produce posts timed during the previous 24 hours relative to your local time setting.

The problem is that you will then find the nav-bar 'What's New?' button highlighted and the breadcrumb last item above the post list will say 'New Posts'. Can't figure out how to change that behaviour I'm afraid but the 'Today's posts' list will be correct. Clicking on the 'What's New' button will then produce items posted since your last log-on.

That'll have to do for now.

Sounds good....but...uhhh... I do see a 'What's New' button...but it contains the exact same as under 'New Posts', which at the moment gives 15 posts [not enough] and none that were there [unless added to] only 7 hours ago when I went to bed. As a matter of fact, none are older than my midnight - when it seems to 'reset'. I think it should be a full 24 hours or even 48 hours, better. I don't mind if there are 3-4 pages of them....most are interested in what has been posted newly. If not it is no problem to go to a topic and see what there or search for a term.

On searching, I find the internal search works somewhat, it does seem to pull up some extraneous ones too. Wasn't there before the choice to search just in the topic and key terms vs. within all posts? That would be a good choice, if available.
Sounds like vBulletin has the mentality of MS.....we make all decisions for you....

Peter et al. I do realize and appreciate all the hassles there you are working on....sorry to add to them. The old software worked better - or seemed to from this end.

I did a quick post after the one referred to above to the effect that the work-around was only implemented on the 'X2' style (accessible from the bottom left of most non-authoring screens or your personal settings). As so often before I seem not to have hit the 'POST' button. Oh dear.

Anyway, the 'Whats New' Button will always behave as you describe. It is the result of a pre-programmed search that endeavours to select posts you haven't viewed yet and is specific to the user.

What HAS changed (on the X2 style anyway) is that that when the 'FORUM' Button is selected, there is ALWAYS a menu item under the NAV bar, to the left that says 'TODAY's POSTS'. That will select all posts for the past 24 hours with reference to your time zone.

I'll implement it on the default style as well this morning if I get time.

Aha! yes, that works better....but....[just trying to keep you busy Peter].....in X2 all seems fine except the contrast difference between the black letters and the dark, DARK blue background on my monitor is so slight I can not read the lettering on the bottom row. Might that blue be lightened? If not, I'll just have to remember about where it is...as I can not see the lettering at all. Sorry :kraka:

Hmm......editing this post....sorry to have to report...it worked [I had a full two pages of recent posts....UNTIL I MADE A POST...and then even in X2 it reverted to [and ONLY to] the 19 since midnight.....is it me or the software?! This company have any connection to PROMIS?

The entire Posts index has been rebuilt from scratch which ought to improve searching on posts prior to mid-December 2010 dramatically.
