I think it is interesting that Gelli apparently worked with the OSS during the War [and CIA after]...this is not talked about much...but seems to make total sense. I'd like to see more documenting this.

Richard Brenneke testified to this end, from Wikipedia (just as a start):

In mid-1990 Brenneke provided documents to Italian journalists regarding Licio Gelli and Propaganda Due (P2), asserting CIA support for their activities.[SUP][17][/SUP] Brenneke told Rai 1 that he had been involved in CIA payments to P2 of $1$10m per month or more, with the money used to finance terrorism and drug trafficking. The CIA rejected a FOIA request regarding Gelli on grounds of national security.[SUP][18][/SUP][SUP][19][/SUP] Gelli and others were later convicted of subverting investigation into the 1980 Bologna Massacre.
