I would suggest it was because the one that was setting up the other probably had different handwriting. I would guess they were trapped by the patsy having too many handwriting samples that were out there to be compared.
Oh what a tangled web we weave...
Albert,
On Labor Day weekend 1963, someone resembling "LEE OSWALD" visited Fidel Castro's best American friend and gunrunner Robert McKeown and tried to buy a rifle to kill JFK but failed to seal the deal. Who was that masked man????

Could you cite the source of this information, and who this someone is that resembles Lee? On Labor Day weekend 1963 which would be early September, they were reporting on him as he was still in New Orleans.
Exactly!! The source of the info is the sworn secret HSCA testimony of Robert McKeown, who was, at the time he met "Oswald", still on parole for a conviction of running guns illegally to Fidel Castro. He was also a close friend of Castro's. McKeown did not want to testify, and had to be granted immunity before doing so. You can read his testimony here:

Had "Lee Oswald" been able to purchase a rifle from Castro's personal friend and gun supplier, is there any doubt that the weapon would have shown up on the sixth floor of the Book Depository?
