The New Yorker isn't known for satire; only Borowitz's part is. That's what throws people.
Got me. I saw it was the New Yorker and figured it was serious. C'est la vie.
The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort.
