The main gist of the Bipartisan Policy Center's speakers is that Turkey's attempted "coup" was an effort by Erdogan to oust members of his own military that had opposed ground intervention in Syria. The speakers opine that Erdogan's rapid roundup, firing, and arrest of tens of thousands of non-military people "cast a shadow" over Turkey's assertions that their pronouncements about US backing. The speakers also suggest that whether or not Turkey's anti-American pronouncements are real, or simply some sort of attempt to gain leverage in their relations with Washington, that policy planners need to start considering situations in which Turkey is a "less reliable ally."
