Do you believe that there is simply one national security elite, united in its goals and preferences?
No, but what faction would want Trump to be president, and for what reason?
The million dollar question. I don't think it's necessarily the case that they want Trump. It is very clear, however, that they don't want Hillary.
I think that goes to the heart of it, but further elaboration is required.
The obvious problem for the Deep State is that another Clinton in the White House seriously threatens its hegemony, such is the scale of the patronage network, domestic and international, constructed in their name. A President who could appoint members of that patronage network to the most senior positions in the FBI, CIA, and so on simply can't be permitted.
Each of the major elements within the Deep State coalition has particular concerns, of course, but a couple of things appear to unify them beyond institutional self-interest: the traditional fear of sharing power; the catastrophic consequences of Wall Street financialization of the domestic economy; and profound doubts about the ability of America to wage war successfully against the Sino-Russian alliance and its allies.
I'm not arguing that there is coherent and considered programme ready for implementation; or that destroying Rodham's candidacy is a solution in and of itself. But I do think there is a tentative consensus about certain changes, changes much more easily effected by a compromised outsider reliant upon the traditional elements of the Deep State for personnel and policies.
