Yes, he was very progressive politically [but this was mostly not reported by the MSM]. He outlived his doctor's predictions by 48 years! and filled his life with great work and play. He should, IMO, have won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his 'Hawking Radiation' theory, now taken as gospel. He surely showed the world that no matter how handicapped the body, the mind can be in the stars and far ahead of able-bodied people. If you have not seen the film about his life, I do suggest it.
