The TV said a "770" mayday was issued via transponder. Not via radio. And no attempt divert to an emergency landing was made. The plane continued flying straight towards the Alps which is a serious mistake in an emergency.
Have to find out if the 770 transponder mayday was automatic. That could be a symptom of several things including an unzipping of the bulkhead due to catastrophic breach of the cabin or airframe failure on the 24 year old Airbus A320.
