The Public Sphere has now been privatized. Should we therefor boycott it, and consign it to a privatized grave? In doing so, we may be helping fascism.
That is why i type on facebook. I type things that I believe should be in the public realm. I dont take quizes and yet I know there is probably psych profiles gleaned from what I type. You just have to keep that in mind, and maybe throw them and or yourself some chin music now and then, or maybe a knuckler. In the end it is about the question of whether or not a public sphere can ever be pieced together again. In many ways I post there for the same reason I believe in Peters efforts to keep a portal open in the other forum re 9/11.
The public sphere is now patchwork. People should think hard pros and cons wise before deciding to abandon a patch. Sure the negatives of the patch might be most obvious at first. But switching to another medium could result in marginalization in a way not thought of by the citizen on retreat.
Thanks Nathaniel. The input is valuable. This is a decision many people need to make, so it helps to deliberate about the pros and cons of being (as [size=12]Carsten puts it) overt.
