The problems with that Guardian article are legion. I emailed its authors yesterday with a few questions but won't hold my breath on a reply.
The suggestion that GW could have had enemies capable of targeting him personally from the sources quoted pre-supposes one of three things:

- a mid-ranking techie had substantial external contact with them - highly unlikely
- his identity as a key threat to them was passed by someone on the inside - historical precedents say possible
- he had a private unauthorised agenda rendering him a threat to either (or both) sides - ditto
