This connection was during a time of Romania's secret CIA prisons and rendition of prisoners for the US and the anschluss of Romania into NATO. Not that the emails show such information more just to embarrass Powell. Cretu seems a willing tool for any one. Pretty much like Powell.

Corina Creţu (born June 24, 1967) is a Romanian politician and journalist, former Spokesperson for the President of Romania during Ion Iliescu's time in office. Elected to the Senate for the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in 2004, she became a Member of the European Parliament (sitting among the Party of European Socialists group) on January 1, 2007, following the accession of Romania to the European Union. She is a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs.
Born in Bucharest, Creţu graduated from the Academy of Economic Studies' Faculty of Cybernetics (1989), and worked as an economist for factories in Blaj and Bucharest until 1990. After the latter date, she was employed as a commentator on current events by the newspapers Azi, Curierul Naţional, and Cronica Română. She worked for President Iliescu's Spokesperson Office during two separate mandates (in 1992-1996 and in 2000-2004); between 2000 and 2004, Creţu was Presidential Advisor (with the rank of Minister), Presidential Spokesperson and Head of the Public Communication Department. In 2002, she was also selected by President Iliescu for the Board of the Romanian Television Company, and confirmed by a vote in Parliament.
As a Senator, she sat on the Foreign Policy Committee, and was a full member of the Romanian Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE. In January 2005, she was invited to Amman, Jordan, where she conducted a training seminar for appointees to spokesperson positions in Iraq.
Creţu was also an OSCE observer to the parliamentary election of March 2005 in Moldova and to the general election of 2006 in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Romanian hacker 'Guccifer' appeals against arrest

(Reuters) - Romanian hacker "Guccifer", famous for breaking into emails of former U.S. president George W. Bush's family and entertainment figures, appealed against his arrest on Friday but the chances for his release appeared slim.
A source in the prosecutor's office confirmed that masked police had netted Marcel Lazar Lehel, known by the aliases "Guccifer" and "Small Fume", on Wednesday and said he was currently being detained for 29 days in Bucharest pending a criminal investigation.
The hacker shot to fame last February after he hacked into Bush family emails and posted artwork by the former president, including self-portraits in the shower and bathtub.
"(Guccifer) was assigned a criminal defense lawyer," the prosecutor's office source said, adding his appeal against his detention would be considered by the court on Monday or Tuesday.
Asked by Reuters whether it had received an extradition request for Guccifer from the United States, Romania's justice ministry said it had no information on the matter.
Local media in Guccifer's home region of Arad in northwest Romania near the Hungarian border said he was a taxi driver by trade, but this could not be confirmed.
Top Romanian lawyer Catalin Dancu said there was "close to no chance" of Guccifer's request to be freed being granted.
"Investigating hacking on such a scale... is an offence that cannot be done with the suspect still at large," said Dancu.
MANY VICTIMS
Guccifer has said he used a variety of methods, including guessing the answers to security questions, to get access to customer accounts at Facebook, Comcast Corp, AOL Inc and other companies.
He already received a suspended sentence in 2012 after a string of hacking charges in Romania.
Guccifer claimed a wide range of victims, including Romanian officials, and provided documents to support those claims to a U.S. website, The Smoking Gun. (here)
Romanian authorities have so far made no mention of Guccifer's activities in the United States or elsewhere.
The hacker has claimed his other victims include Tina Brown, the former editor of The New Yorker magazine; "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes; journalist Carl Bernstein; venture capitalist John Doerr, and MetLife Chief Executive Steven Kandarian.
Guccifer also compromised many former U.S. military officials, including ex-Secretary of the Air Force George Roche.
Last year, the hacker distributed emotional emails sent to former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell from European Parliament member Corina Cretu, a Romanian, prompting Powell to deny that they had had an affair.
The U.S. embassy in Bucharest said Romanian hackers had stolen about $1 billion from U.S. accounts in 2012.
A report by Verizon said Romania, a former communist country that is now a U.S. ally in NATO and a member of the European Union, was the world's second-biggest hacking center after China.

Notorious hacker Guccifer sentenced in Romania

Guccifer's roster of victims include relatives and friends of former President George H.W. Bush.

A hacker, notorious for accessing the personal email accounts of celebrities and high-profile figures, including President George H.W. Bush's family and friends, has been sentenced to prison.
On Friday, a judge in Romania handed down a four-year sentence to Marcel Lehel, who also went by the online alias "Guccifer," according to Reuters. Because Lehel also faces a three-year suspended sentence, he could be incarcerated for up to seven years, the outlet reported.
The hacker, who apparently also worked as a cab driver, was arrested in January and pleaded guilty to hacking crimes last month. In addition serving his time, Lehel was reportedly ordered to pay 11,000 lei, or $3,400, in legal fees.
Back in January, Guccifer's hacking spree on a number of high-profile people, including comedian Steve Martin, editor Tina Brown and author Candace Bushnell, was reported by The Smoking Gun.
In that instance, he claimed to have accessed email accounts by scouring his targets' Wikipedia pages in order to guess the answers to password hints protecting their accounts. After breaking into their email, Guccifer downloaded the address books of victims, giving him the means to continue his exploits on new targets.
In July 2013, reports also surfaced that Guccifer had hacked Roy Apseloff, the former deputy CIO of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). Gawker published the ill-gotten email exchanges, which included scantily-clad photos from Apseloff's female acquaintances and other personal photos Guccifer submitted to the media outlet.
The emails Guccifer obtained from Bush's family and friends entailed correspondence over a three-year period, from 2009 to 2012, most notably, leaked self-portaits of Bush showering and bathing.
