2081: Film Adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's Dystopian Short Story

Video: (Click on URL below - AE)

A 23-minute film directed by Chandler Tuttle. An adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's "Harrison Bergeron," a story first published in 1961.

A short film adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's Harrison Bergeron, 2081 depicts a dystopian future in which, thanks to the 212th Amendment to the Constitution and the unceasing vigilance of the United States Handicapper General, everyone is "finally equal...."

The strong wear weights, the beautiful wear masks and the intelligent wear earpieces that fire off loud noises to keep them from taking unfair advantage of their brains. It is a poetic tale of triumph and tragedy about a broken family, a brutal government, and an act of defiance that changes everything.

Featuring an original score performed by the world-renowned Kronos Quartet (Requiem for a Dream) and narration by Academy Award Nominee Patricia Clarkson (Far From Heaven, Goodnight and Good Luck), 2081 stars James Cosmo (Braveheart, Trainspotting), Julie Hagerty (Airplane!, What About Bob?) and Armie Hammer (The Social Network).

The "dumbing down" that has been going on in American educatiion for years will certainly make us all "equally dumb".

Tellin' it like it is was Kurt's only way to be.
A public school product of Shortridge High, he pointed out that when he was in high school Indiana had the one of the highest literacy rates in the nation, but by the 1990s only Mississippi and Arkansas ranked lower than Indiana.
He made this point on a local PBS interview in about 2002.
He had come to a "Douglass-esque" view long before some.

I have no higher tribute than this fact, I own very little fiction. Kurt Vonnegut I do have and have done so since I read Slaughter House 5.

We miss ya Kurt, and yes it is better to laugh than cry - less mess left from laughin'.
Read not to contradict and confute;
nor to believe and take for granted;
nor to find talk and discourse;
but to weigh and consider.

Vonnegut is [was] one of the better American writers IMHO - and his stories, while seemingly 'light' on the surface, were very deep, indeed. Slaughterhouse Five was made into a very good film. The book I've re-read more times than I remember. Cat's Cradle is great too, as is the Sirens of Titan...in fact, they are all good!
