As I write, the vote for leaving is nearing 53% - a surprise to most and sending a shiver down the collective spine of European polity and World finance. I think the average voter for leaving was as much saying 'fuck the Establishment for fucking up my own life' inside of the UK as they were making a cogent statement on the institution of the EU or the UK within it. It really is going to shake things up in Europe and the World...exactly how is not completely clear - but I predict a lot.

It looks definite. Leaving. The stock market is plummeting even here. Pound crashing. Gold up and up. While some Commonwealth politicians are already offering trade deals with the UK citizens here is Oz are talking about leaving the Commonwealth and having a Republic. Occupied Ireland are looking to join the rest of Ireland as they want to remain in the EU. With Scotland. So it looks like there will be another vote for Scottish independence. We are living in interesting times. I expect David Cameron to lose his job and a new Boris Johnson PM soon. Followed by a Labour government soon after. It would be good if the UK could keep the good bits of the EU (human rights and worker protections) even if they chuck the rest but I am not so sure that is on the table. The UK will be fine. Switzerland does okay with out it. But I wonder about the viability of the EU. Some in Holland are already jostling to get a referendum. Greece came close before and may revisit it.

Yep, it's out. Cameron to make an announcement shortly.

Beyond words. This is going to be a long, hot summer.

Cameron resigns. He'll remain as caretaker PM for 3 months.

Double whammy!

Since I've been forbidden to post the following on my FB page to avoid gloating or upsetting friends and family, I'll do it here. One in the eye for the entire global elite:

Poor David. You can definitely post it here. And I shall share it for you Smile

It is interesting. There are (obviously) a significant number of people who voted to leave. Yes, some are racist xenophobic little England types. But most are not. There are a lot who see this as a way to gain some control over their lives since the wreckage of neo-liberalism and finance capital has wrought through the land. And a big FU to elite rule. I don't think Obama's visit did him any good. It is the same way that there are many sane people considering Trump over Hilary. There are some good policies amongst the raging insanity too.

I wonder if the UK can join the BRICs. Surely there can not be another LibCon government in the UK? So pleased to see the end of Cameron. Does this mean a BoJo PM until the election?

No, Cameron will stay until October when a Tory Party conference will vote on a new leader.

And I so agree Maggie.... a BIG FU to the ruling elite. I see that Pepe Escobar is posting in joy on FB about the result. :-) Lovely jubbly.

Blairite Labour are shooting themselves in the foot, or heart, on behalf of the ruling elite by submitting a motion of no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn for not pushing harder for the losing side which people have obviously rejected.

Quote:Two Labour MPs have submitted a motion of no confidence in Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
Margaret Hodge and Ann Coffey confirmed the move in a letter to the chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party.
The motion has no formal constitutional force but calls for a discussion at their next PLP meeting on Monday.
It will be up to the PLP chairman to decide whether it is debated. If accepted it would be followed by a secret ballot of Labour MPs on Tuesday.

And Nicola Sturgeon has announced plans for a second referendum for Scottish Independence as a result of the EU referendum results.

Classic Blairites continuing to ignore the clear will of the vast majority of the members of their Party and focusing on controlling the Party through the Parliamentary group. My guess is that they fear loss of the great gravy train.

Were the elites in the UK also divided on this issue? Otherwise, I would think they could easily have rigged it in favor (favour?) of Remain. Though watching the way they were handling the votes on TV last night, I can see they were doing everything possible to avoid the appearance of ballots disappearing.

Yes I think there were divisions. But I think it was along the lines of Big Capital which is transnational in nature (Rothschild wanted to stay in) and function and a the smaller British capital. Don't have exactly the same interests though lots of cross over.

The vast majority of the elite wanted to remain. The right-wing rump in the Conservative Party drove the Brexit campaign - but the people have, largely been anti the EU for reasons of sovereignty and also immigration. The net result is that an important battle has been won, but it's now the time to limit and hinder the right-wingers and push for even greater democracy. As I said earlier, the main take-away is that the political elite now have to learn to listen to the people and not rule by diktat - which is what has been happening.

It looks as if in a few years it will be the UK of Britain and Wales [only], with two new nations [1.5 sort of]. There is currently a run on EU N. Ireland passports by those in the other part of Ireland. So many BIG changes will come out of this - still not known if for the good or the bad...but changes for sure! Interestingly in the 'Leave' vote there were two distinct and opponent 'camps' - that of the Left [which was against elitist control both in and out of the UK/EU and the politics of 'austerity'] and that of the Right [which mainly wanted to control the influx of non-Brits and were nostalgic for the 'Old UK' going it alone and apart]. They had some overlap of issues, but also have two different visions under one option in the vote. I'm oversimplifying a lot I know, but not entirely. It was a kick in the pants to the UK elites, the EU elites, London Corporation and those who feed off of it.
