Israel, Lebanon Exchange Fire at Border; Four Soldiers Dead, Arabiya Says

One Israeli and three Lebanese soldiers and a local journalist were killed, Al Arabiya television reported, as Israeli and Lebanese troops exchanged fire in one of the most serious border incidents since the 2006 conflict.
The website of Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia also reported that one Israeli soldier was killed. Spokesmen for the Lebanese and Israeli armies refused to comment on the reports. Dubai- based Arabiya didn’t say where it obtained the information.
UN forces in Lebanon contacted the Israeli and Lebanese armies and urged “maximum restraint” after the incident, Milos Strugar, an official with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, said. Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri condemned what he called “Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty.” His remarks were released by the state-run National News Agency.
The Israeli-Lebanese border has been largely quiet since the July-August 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, in which about 1,200 Lebanese and 159 Israelis were killed. The peace agreement that ended the conflict included the deployment of Lebanese forces into the country’s south to prevent further clashes.
An Israeli army spokesman, speaking on customary condition of anonymity, said Lebanese soldiers opened fire first at Israeli forces.
Arabiya television said the clash started after the Israeli army attempt to put up surveillance cameras along the border and cut down a tree. After the Lebanese army made some movements, an Israeli tank opened fire, Arabiya reported. The Israeli soldier, a high-ranking officer, was killed by a sniper, it said.
Helicopter Fire
A Lebanese army spokesman said during the clashes an Israeli helicopter fired rockets at a Lebanese army position, hitting the position and an armored vehicle. He said one soldier was wounded. He declined to be identified in accordance with army policy.
Last October, a rocket was fired from Lebanon into Israel. Hezbollah, which shot 4,000 rockets into Israel during the 2006 conflict, denied responsibility for that incident and earlier rocket attacks last year.
Israel’s TA-25 Index dropped to 1,135.84 as of 2:32 p.m. in Tel Aviv, from its intraday high of 1,146.52, following the reports.
