The Hidden History Center 's lease in Falls Church , VA ,expired in September, so we found a lovely new location. It is in Hayshire Plaza on North George Street in York , PA , convenientlylocated just a mile or so off I-83.
Thisspace has several advantages over our previous Falls Church office. The building is newer, and the office is cleaner and carpeted. It is on the first floor, instead ofthe second, so it is handicapped accessible. It is less expensive, andyet it is 400 square feet larger, so we are not as crowded as we were in Falls Church . We have five rooms instead of four, as well asa lovely kitchenette. You can check outthe photos on the HHC News tabon our website.
Mostimportantly, this location is geographically convenient for our faithful volunteers, the majority of whom live either in Baltimore ornear York . Thenew office is only 8 miles from my house, so I can work at the Center any timeI want, without making a 5-hour commute to do so. That is a huge relief for me! I am writing to you right now from my cozynew office, with John's photo over my head and his two dear stuffed friends,Clownie and Ducky, right beside me.
Wemade the big move all in one long 15-hour day, on Saturday, September 10. Itwas a huge project, but Piccolo's Friendly Movers from York made it look easy. Six young men workeda very long day in 100-degree heat, handling John's collection with great careand respect. We are very grateful to all of them.
Sofar, we have been putting together tables and getting work spaces situated. Susanne Zeiders, the Center's volunteerlibrarian, will soon pick up where she left off, inventorying the McGeheeLibrary. Deborah and others will renewefforts to organize John's extensive document collection. We have developed an index, which we areusing to put the documents into categories. Richard Ochs will continue to help us with our many logistics projectsand is, as always, a great source of support and inspiration. Thanks also to John's former intern, Chandra, who pitches in when we need her most.
Ourgoals are to catalog and shelve John's book collection, and to organize anddigitize the documents in his archive. Our Assistant Director, DaveRatcliffe, will soon be donating some digitizing equipment to help in thiseffort.
Davehas also donated countless hours to the development of our website, hiddenhistorycenter.org.It debuted in a much-improved form a short time ago. You are cordially invitedto take some time to explore it. Itgrows more extensive with each passing month.
