You could list a number of events and incidents which would connect to the need to embarrass or weaken the President of the United States. You could include the offering of a position to entice the opponent of Arlen Specter to withdraw, or perhaps events in the Middle East (the Gaza flotilla attack, plans for Iran with IDF nuclear cruise missile subs off Iran as we speak, the business about a nuke-free Mideast, or other affronts Israel may be feeling), or the Gulf of Mexico situation, or various other political events (most notably the brouhaha about the DOD don't ask, don't tell policy), or just in general.
If the second WMR report is true and accurate (the earlier WMR report suggests strongly that it is), it can be said that the knowledge of this in many circles was known -- it was news to me, but then I'm not generally peering into people's sex lives.
But if it was known in the past, as it surely must have been if it is true, then why was it released now? Why not previously? Why not save it for a different moment?
And, of course, who...
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to conclude that a gay man in the Presidency is not something America was or is ready for.
If the report is accurate, and if he was present, participant, or inclined prior to running for office, then there should have been some self-disclosure... likely fatal to any candidacy, for sure, but if the report is accurate, then he has no one to blame but himself. And if the report is accurate, then it surely raises questions about his handlers, the people who propelled him into office, etc., because it is -- as the piece noted -- a situation ripe for political blackmail.
I think the question here is really quite simple and has nothing whatsoever to do with homophobia or whether one can accept homosexuality. The person is question is not just the guy down the street.
The person in question is the President of the United States of America (and his Chief of Staff) who, by definition, have access to some of the most closely-held secrets, considered strategies and tactics, black ops technologies in development, secret operations, and more. That he is in a situation in which he can be compromised, in which he is potentially under the direct psychological manipulation or duress by another, that the "other" is a relatively unknown character who is not "cleared" in any sense by anyone or who might be an operative for a foreign nation or an individual whose true allegiance is not to the POTUS, the US, is cause for concern.
The same could be (and has been) said of other Presidents, and it matters not that the the rendezvous is with a woman or a man, homosexual or heterosexual. Given a very long record of sexual or other behavioral shenanigans involving many top officials, it is cause for concern.
The question also has to do with whether such a lifestyle is acceptable to vast portions of the American electorate. But the American electorate has been slowly lulled to a state of hypnagogic delusion... the concept of a "holographic" state already having been described elsewhere.
The question also has to do with timing, since the use of such disclosures in conjunction with national and international events is easily assumed. The question also has to do with the selected vehicle of disclosure; there were, as noted, prior disclosures ignored or covered up.

"The word from federal national security officials is that the outgoing Bush administration picked up a wealth of ‘blackmailable’ intelligence on Obama and Emanuel from their wiretaps of the now president and his chief of staff. Obama’s sleazy deals with Rezko and his shopping of his Senate seat and Emanuel’s contacts with Israeli intelligence officials and his penchant for bizarre behavior at Chicago gymnasiums frequented by the city’s professional and affluent gay community reportedly stand at the top of the FBI’s “catch.”
