David,
Correct on Conein and some of his Union Corse cronies.
Which tells me that they were playing double games with Guerini et al, and received their rewards.
An interesting footnote to history: Charles Sheldon Whitehouse, former US ambassador to Laos and Thailand in the 1970s and father of Rhode Island's current junior US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse -- the liberal lion ready to pounce on the Cheney-Bush beast -- officiated at Conein's wedding.
See the NYT's obituary for the official bio:

For a revealing (for what it states and DOESN'T state) insight into the Whitehouse mind, see

If an individual, through either his own volition or events over which he had no control, found himself taking up residence in a country undefined by flags or physical borders, he could be assured of one immediate and abiding consequence: He was on his own, and solitude and loneliness would probably be his companions unto the grave.

You can't blame the innocent, they are always guiltless. All you can do is control them or eliminate them. Innocence is a kind of insanity.
