He would have received the pay stub on 5/31 or perhaps a couple days later. May 31 was a Friday. He orders the handbills, assuming the paycheck is coming, and obtains the handbills (and pays for them) the same day he is actually paid or shortly thereafter.

Maybe he's figured he's going to get his teeth kicked in if he stamps the handbills with his real name and address.
